Best Ways to Plant Crops in Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town

There are two types of crops: renewable and non-renewable crops. The renewable crops continue to produce crops after you harvest them, provided that you water them daily. The non-renewable crops only grow once, and you need to buy and plant their seeds again.

Remember to plant the right crops for the current season. While you can buy and plant seeds that are not meant for the current season, they will not grow and disappear the next day. Even if the next day is the right season for a seed, it will still disappear.

How to Plant Crops

Before you can start planting crops, you need to buy seeds. You can buy seasonal seeds from the Supermarket, or from Won’s shop. Once you have seeds for the current season, you can use your hoe to prepare the soil for planting.

Equip the seed bag in your rucksack and press the B button to plant the seeds. Each seed bag contains 9 seeds that get planted in a 3×3 square around you. You need to use the watering can to water the seeds every day.

Important Note: Seeds that land on untilled soil will not grow, and seeds don’t grow if you don’t water them.

Best Crop Formations

Full Square Pattern

The full square formation covers a 3×3 square of soil to maximize your profits. If you use this pattern, no seed will go to waste. However, you cannot water and harvest the middle square once the crop grows. You need at least a silver watering can to make the most out of the full square pattern.

To plant seeds using this pattern, till a 3×3 square of land. Hold the seeds in your hand and stand in the middle of the square. Then press the B button to plant the seeds.

Note: Remember to leave a space between your 3×3 squares so you can walk around them.

The best crops to plant using the full square pattern are non-renewable crops, like potatoes, turnip, and onions. You can only harvest these crops once, and you need to buy seeds again if you want to plan them again.

U-Shape / C-Shape Pattern

The best pattern at the start of the game is the U-Shape or C-Shape pattern. Unlike the full square pattern, you can harvest and water all the crops you plant using this pattern. The only downside is you can only plant 8 seeds, so you’ll receive less gold than the full square pattern.

To plant seeds using this pattern, till a 3×3 square of land and leave one square untilled. Stand in the middle of the square while holding the seeds and press the B button to plant them.

The best crops to plant using the U-Shape pattern are renewable crops like corn, pineapple, or cucumbers. You only plant these crops once, and they regrow after a few days after you harvest them.

Parallel Rows

The parallel rows work best when you want to plant a lot of crops and harvest them fast. You’ll receive less gold than the full square or the u-shape pattern when using this pattern. The only advantage is you can harvest crops faster, since there are no gaps between the long rows of crops.

To plant crops using this pattern, till two 3×3 squares of land side by side. Then, use the hammer to flatten soil and make a path in the middle of the 3×3 square.

Tip: You can also use a piece of lumber, stone, or branches to flatten the soil.

This is not the best pattern in terms of revenue, but using this pattern, you can harvest rows and rows of crops faster than any other method.

Donut Pattern

The donut pattern works like the u-shape pattern, but this time you leave the middle square untilled. The profit is also the same, since you will also plant 8 seeds using this pattern.

The disadvantage of this pattern is that weeds can grow in the middle of the square. You can prevent this by placing a stone, branch, or piece of lumber at the center.

Based on looks, this pattern is the best one to use. You can have a fairly organized farm that looks beautiful without sacrificing your profits.
