The cabbage is a spring crop in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. Of all the normal seeds that you can buy normally, cabbages generate the most amount of gold per seed bag. You should plant some cabbages as soon as you can afford them, as they can bring you lots of gold during spring.

The Fat-C Method
This planting method involves tilling a 3×3 square of soil and leaving one square on the edge untilled, planting just 8 crops instead of 9. This is the most efficient method of planting crops during the early stages of the game since the center crop is inaccessible without an upgraded watering can.
