The chicken coop is a building where chickens live in Harvest Moon Back to Nature. Initially, there’s only enough space for a few chickens. Gotz at the Woodcutter’s House can help you expand the chicken coop if you provide the needed materials.

The Chicken Coop

You start the game with the normal chicken coop. Any chicken that you buy from the Poultry Farm gets sent here automatically. The regular chicken coop has a maximum capacity of five chickens.

The normal chicken coop comes with five feed boxes, a feed dispenser that conveniently dispenses chicken feed, and an incubator where you may place eggs to hatch baby chicks.

There is also a shipping bin inside the chicken coop so you don’t have to exit the building to ship eggs.

Chickens

You must feed the chickens daily to increase their affection. Chickens will lay eggs daily if you feed them regularly and are in good health. The quality of the eggs they produce depends on their affection levels, but the price is always 50G.

Upgrading the Chicken Coop

Talk to Gotz in the Woodcutter’s House to upgrade your chicken coop. For this expansion, you need 420 lumber and 5000G. Gotz will finish building and expanding your chicken coop in 3 days.

Once Gotz is done, you can now buy more chickens from the Poultry Farm and buy a mayonnaise maker from Saibara.

Benefits of the Chicken Coop Expansion

More Chickens and Incubators

The expanded chicken coop has more room and can now house ten chickens. There will also be an additional feed dispenser. Thanks to the additional incubator included in the expansion, you can now hatch two eggs at once.

Eggs make an excellent source of money during winter when you can’t plant crops on your farm. An upgraded chicken coop with 10 chickens can make 500G per day.

Mayonnaise Maker

Aside from the additional space for more chickens, the chicken coop expansion also allows you to place a mayonnaise maker inside. For one adamantite ore (found in the Winter Mine) and 20000G, the blacksmith Saibara can build a mayonnaise maker for you. It takes 5 days to build.

To make mayonnaise, place an egg on the mayonnaise maker. The quality of the mayonnaise the machine produces depends on the quality of the egg placed. 

Upgrading the chicken coop and getting the mayonnaise maker are worthwhile investments because the mayonnaise sells for more than a typical egg.

Note: Golden Eggs are the best type of eggs you can get in the game. A chicken that has won at the Chicken Festival will lay Golden Eggs.

Unlocking the House Upgrade

You’ll be able to upgrade your other farm buildings after upgrading the chicken coop. The first house expansion unlocks after upgrading the chicken coop. This is important if you want to have the kitchen and marry a girl in the game.
