How to beat the Dragonlord in Dragon Quest 1
How to beat the Dragonlord in Dragon Quest 1

You can find the Dragonlord in the final dungeon of the game, the Dragonlord’s Castle west of Rimuldar, after you’ve made the Rainbow Drop

Here are some tips to prepare you for the final battle:

  • Be at least level 20. This is the final battle. If you’re not there yet, grind in Damdara or in Dragonlord’s Castle.
  • Gear:
    • Erdrick’s Armor – Find it in Damdara. See our guide on how to get it.
    • Silver Shield – Buy in Cantlin
    • Erdrick Sword – You should make a first run of Dragonlord’s Castle to get this sword. See our guide on how to do it.
    • Dragon Scale – Buy at any Item Shop.
    • The Warrior’s Ring – Found in Craggy Cave. See our guide on how to navigate the cave.
    • Stock up on Medicinal Herbs and Magic Keys.

Enter the throne room through the left path. Don’t waste your keys on the locked doors as the rooms are empty. Search the sparkle behind the throne to access the first basement floor. Try to conserve your MP as much as possible while making your way to the Dragonlord by healing yourself with Medicinal Herbs.

Basement Floor 1

Cast Glow as soon as you enter as it will be dark. Open the first door with a key and follow the entire path until you reach the second basement floor.

Basement Floor 2

From this floor onwards you’ll find Blue Dragons and Stone Golems. We recommend you run from the Golems rather than fight them as they have too much HP and will waste your time and resources. Follow the linear path that goes in a spiral around the floor until you reach the next staircase.

Basement Floor 3

Head left to find two chests, they contain a Medicinal Herb and Gold. Now head back right, go up and skip the first stairs that you’ll see. Continue the path left and take the next set of stairs.

Basement Floor 4

At this point, if you haven’t gotten Erdrick’s Sword yet, you can head down to get it (more detailed guide here). Otherwise, head to the right and cross the two narrow pathways and you’ll see the stairs to the next floor.

Basement Floor 5

On this floor and the next ones you’ll encounter Red Dragons and Knight Abhorrents. Be especially aware of the Red Dragons as they can cast Fizzle on you. This floor is just one linear path so just follow on through.

Basement Floor 6

This floor is one single room. Walk to the right to reach the last floor.

Basement Floor 7

First, head straight up and unlock the door with a Magic Key. You’ll enter into a room with nine chests. Two of them are empty, on the others you’ll find a cursed Waistband, a Medicinal Herb, a Magic Key, a Chimaera Wing, a Seed of Magic and two chests with Gold.

Head back down and turn left this time. Follow the wide path up, then right on the first turn, and keep following the path until you cross two bridges.

Beating the Dragonlord

Beating the Dragonlord | Dragon Quest 1
Dragonlord
225 HP – 40 MP – Snooze, Midheal, Sizzle.
Keep attacking him with physical attacks, and cast Midheal on yourself whenever your health goes below 100 HP. That way, even if he casts Snooze on you, you can survive some attacks.
Eventually he will go down. But wait! There’s more…
Beating the Dragonlord (True Form ) | Dragon Quest 1
Dragonlord (True Form)
300 HP – 0 MP – Fire Breath, Torrent of Flames, Blistering Flames
This form is much harder. His Blistering Flames and physical attacks are very damaging. Fire Breath and Torrent of Flames should do negligible damage if you have Erdrick’s Armor as the armor reduces their damage.
Keep attacking and casting Midheal on yourself whenever your health goes below 100 HP, and with enough luck, he’ll do the weak attacks more often than not.

Congratulations! You’ve defeated Dragonlord, the final boss of the game. You only need to get back to Tantegel to watch the ending scene. On your way back, you’ll notice that the world is changed now; the poisonous marshes are now covered in flowers, and you can find the ghost of Galem in Damdara.

Note: The ending scene you see will vary depending on if you rescued the princess or not! See our guide on how to rescue Princess Gwaelyn.
