ED-E’s companion quest, “ED-E My Love” can be unlocked by talking to specific people about the Enclave, old-world technological wonders, or other high-tech items in ED-E’s presence.
Quick tips before you start the quest:
- You can know if you activated the quest if you hear an audio log. Once you speak to one of the following individuals, you will know if you triggered the quest if ED-E plays an audio log. There are 2 logs that must be activated for the quest to start.
Activating Audio Log #1
To activate the first audio log, you can speak about either history or the Enclave/Brotherhood of Steel to any of the following individuals:
Old Lady Gibson (as long as you haven’t spoken to her about her past before), Doctor Henry, Ignacio Ricas, Knight Torres, Apprentice Watkins, Thomas Hildern, Colonel Moore, Michael Angelo, Mr. House, Quartermaster Mayes, or Brotherhood of Steel paladin small talk.
As long as you’re not hostile to the NCR, speaking to Quartermaster Mayes will be the easiest, as it doesn’t require you to finish any prerequisite quests or travel through any long/confusing areas.
Speaking to Quartermaster Mayes
First, travel to Camp Forlorn Hope, northeast of Novac. Then enter the headquarters and speak to Major Polatli.

Once you’ve opened dialogue with him, select the following 2 dialogue options:

Next, exit the HQ and go to Mayes’ tent, which can be found right next to the HQ. Once there, talk to Mayes.

After you’ve initiated dialogue with him, select the following dialogue lines.

If you’ve done everything correctly, ED-E will start the first audio log.
Activating Audio Log #2
To activate the second audio log, you have to speak to any of the following characters after 5 in-game days pass:
Michael Angelo (by starting the quest Classic Inspiration), Veronica Santangelo (during her companion quest I Could Make You Care), the NCR ranger that the Brotherhood has you deal with while gaining their trust, Apprentice Watkins, Doctor Hildern and Doctor Williams, Ignacio Rivas (during the quest That Lucky Old Sun), or Brotherhood of Steel paladin small talk.
Speaking to NCR soldiers outside of Helios One
Just like before, players that aren’t hostile to the NCR have an advantage, as there is an incredibly easy way to trigger the second audio log.
To do this, simply travel to Helios One, a power plant located north of Novac

Once there, walk toward the entrance of the power plant. You will be stopped by Leuitenant Haggerty.

She’ll ask you to state your business. Select any one of the non-violent dialogue options and exit the dialogue.
Now, simply walk up to any one of the regular soldiers and interact with them until the audio log plays. This works because they have a dialogue line that they sometimes say that mentions Helios One, which triggers the audio log. Thanks to it being a random dialogue line, this method should also work even if you’ve visited Helios One before.

Quest Rewards
The remainder of the quest will start approximately 2 days after both audio logs have been triggered. The quest is rather simple to follow from this point onwards, so it won’t be explained in further detail in the interest of avoiding unnecessary spoilers, however, there are 2 quest rewards that the player may receive depending on which route they decide to go from here on.
- Selecting the Brotherhood of Steel route will upgrade ED-E’s armor, changing his DT from 8 to 20.
- Selecting the Followers of the Apocalypse route will upgrade ED-E with a Laser Zapper, similar to the one that ED-E has in the Lonesome Road DLC, but it’s actually even stronger. This weapon is only used at close range, but it deals more damage, attacks faster, and has a higher critical hit chance and higher accuracy.
