How to win the EGO Style Competition to get the Platinum Mail in Dragon Quest VII

You’ll get the Platinum Mail by winning the EGO Style competition in El Ciclo with a male character. This is a unique item, so you can’t find it or buy it anywhere else.

Warning: This guide contains some spoilers for Dragon Quest VII.

Getting Greta’s Letter

You can’t win the EGO Style competition until you do this sidequest. The first place will always have 999 Style points until you do this.

You can start this quest after you unlock El Ciclo in the present time. After speaking with everyone in the EGO headquarters (the immediate building after the church), travel to Greta’s Cottage, a lonely house on an island in Al-Balad, to the northwest of Temple Palace.

Talk to Greta, get the Greta’s Letter from her and deliver it to the man behind the counter in the EGO headquarters. Return to Greta after this to get a pair of Glass Slippers from her.

Winning the EGO Style Competition

Now that you have finished this quest, you can participate in the EGO Style competition. Head to the EGO headquarters and register a male character to participate. Talk to the man again to start the competition.

To win, your registered character needs to have the following Style stats, depending on your moment in the game:

Before doing Greta’s sidequest	999 Style (impossible to win)
After the sidequest, but before finishing Nottagen, Providence, and Hubble	200 Wisdom or higher
Before defeating Orgodemir for the first time	260 Wisdom or higher
After defeating Orgodemir	307 Wisdom or higher

A good way to make sure you get the first place is registering your main hero, changing his vocation to one with a decent bonus for Style, like a Troubadour, Dancer or Luminary.

Equip him with a Silk Tuxedo and a Bow Tie; both can be bought or found in many shops, and having both equipped will give you a hidden +25 bonus in style points when you enter the competition. Also give him some Pretty Betsy’s to boost his Style points if it still doesn’t reach the level you need.

If you do all this you should easily win the competition. After getting first place, you’ll be rewarded with the Platinum Mail!

This piece of armor can be really useful, especially if you get it early in the story. Not only does it have a decent defense value, but it reduces 20 points of damage from all incoming non-Zap spells, something very useful against most bosses.
