The Fastest Way to get to New Vegas in Fallout: New Vegas
The Fastest Way to get to New Vegas in Fallout: New Vegas

The quickest way to get to New Vegas is to get the 2 Stealth Boys hidden around Goodsprings and take the highway north.

Quick tips before you read onward:

  • Deathclaws ahead. While you won’t have to fight them, always keep in mind that, if you aren’t careful, you may alert the Deathclaws that are scattered along the highway north of Goodsprings.
  • Logan’s Loophole. If you have the Logan’s Loophole trait, you only need to get 1 of the two Stealth Boys.
  • Likely to gain Powder Gangers infamy. Unless you made a character with a high starting Stealth skill, you’ll likely have to kill a Powder Ganger, leading to infamy with his faction.
  • Lockpick skill of 15 or Science skill of 15 required. One of the two Stealth Boys is hidden inside an easy-locked safe, which can be opened with a Lockpick skill of 25 or a Science skill of 25. There are guaranteed ways of getting a skill-boosting magazine for either skill within Goodsprings (read onwards if you need one).

How to get the two skill-boosting magazines

Locksmith’s Reader

If you have a lockpick skill of 15 or more, you can open the safe by lockpicking it.

To get the Lockpicking magazine, called “Locksmith’s Reader”, you must speak to Sunny Smiles, located inside the Prospector Saloon, just by the fast travel point to Goodsprings. If it’s your first time entering the saloon, she will speak to you right as you enter.

Ask Sunny Smiles if there is any work to be done. She’ll tell you that there is a locked safe inside the Schoolhouse and give you several bobby pins as well as a Locksmith’s Reader.

Programmer’s Digest

You can also open the safe with an adjacent terminal, which is also easy-locked, meaning that you need a Science skill of 25 or above to open it.

If you have a science skill of at least 15, you can use a Science magazine, called “Programmer’s Digest”. To get it, simply look for it next to a toolbox, which is located next to the glowing terminal inside the schoolhouse (see the Full Walkthrough for more info on that). The Programmer’s Digest is located there.

Getting the Stealth Boys

To get to New Vegas, you must find at least 2 Stealth Boys, luckily, the starting town of Goodsprings has exactly 2 Stealth Boys hidden around town.

Stealth Boy 1: The Goodsprings Schoolhouse

To find the first Stealth Boy, you must go to the Goodsprings Schoolhouse, located just to the left of Doc Michell’s house, at the edge of Goodsprings. If you’re having trouble finding it, you can also look for Victor’s Shack, which is right next to the Schoolhouse.

Once you find the schoolhouse, enter through one of the two entrances.

Once inside, look for a safe next to a glowing terminal. You can open the safe by either lockpicking it or by hacking the terminal.

Once the safe is open, you can loot one Stealth Boy out of it.

Stealth Boy 2: Joe Cobb

The second Stealth Boy is carried by Joe Cobb, a Powder Ganger that you can find inside the Prospector Saloon after you finish the Tutorial.

To start the tutorial, speak to Sunny Smiles, who’s located inside the Prospector Saloon, again she’ll speak to you automatically if it’s your first time entering the Prospector Saloon.

Select the dialogue option asking her to teach you to survive in the Wasteland. She’ll tell you to meet her behind the Saloon. Go there and wait for her, or you can just follow her if you’re having trouble.

She’ll give you a Varmit rifle and tell you to shoot a couple of bottles. You can just shoot down 3 bottles and tell her that she taught you enough and go back inside the saloon. However, if you’d like to get some more ammo out of this task, you can drop the ammo she gives you, talk to her and she’ll give you 60 additional 5.56 rounds.

Once you’re back inside the Saloon, you’ll hear Joe Cobb, a man dressed in a blue shirt with a ballistic vest worn over it, threatening the bartender.

Here, you can either kill Joe Cobb and take the Stealth Boy, or you can try to pickpocket it off of him by crouching, ensuring that you are in a [HIDDEN] state and interacting with Joe. This will open his inventory and you can attempt to steal the Stealth Boy. Keep in mind that this will likely fail, as your Sneak skill is likely not very high at this point in the game.

The Road to Vegas

Once you have both of the Stealth Boys, head to the town of Sloan. Simply follow the road as shown below.

You will be stopped by a miner who will tell you that the road north is filled with Deathclaws. He will warn you to not continue. Ignore his warning and continue.

Save your game in case you die, crouch, activate the first Stealth Boy, and stay right of the road, using the hills there as a way to break the line of sight as much as possible.

Keep track of the time. The Stealth Boys last 2 real-life minutes each, so once it’s been around a minute and a couple of seconds, activate the second one and follow the road as seen on the map below.

Once the second Stealth Boy runs out of time, you should be long past the Deathclaws. Continue up the road and you will eventually see New Vegas in the distance.
