You’ll find three Red Fragments in Ballymoloy’s island and Estard Castle, both in the past and present. With these fragments you’ll be able to restore the first Red Pillar and continue the main story.
Warning: this guide contains some minor spoilers for the first chapter of Dragon Quest VII.
Preparations
- Be around Level 6. Hanlon will join your party after you heal him. You can take advantage of his high stats to grind some easy levels.
- Gear up in Ballymoloy. You can only buy a Bamboo Spear for Maribel for now, but you should equip both the hero and Kiefer with a Copper Sword and Leather Armor. Also, make sure to stock up on Medicinal Herbs.
Finding the first Red Fragment
After you explore the Rainbow Mines and find the Green Gem, you can go back to Ballymoloy and use it to heal Hanlon. He’ll join your party and tell you to go east and clear a tower from monsters.
Now that you have Hanlon in your party, you can take the chance to grind some levels easier. After resting in town, head west and circle the entire island clockwise, following the shoreline, until you reach the tower.
Don’t enter the tower, but climb it through the side stairs. You’ll find a Golem blocking the path. Talk to him to start a mini-boss fight.

| You don’t have a lot of skills yet, but Maribel’s “Sap” skill will help you a lot. Make sure to cast it twice to lower his defense, and then simply attack while keeping your party healed. He’ll fall in no time. |
After defeating him, he’ll drop a Green Fragment. It’ll be useful later.
Enter the tower through the newly opened path. Go down the stairs and you’ll find a chest with a Bronze Knife and the first Red Fragment beside the chest.
Finding the second Red Fragment
After you clear the tower and defeat Maeve, your party will travel back to the present, and Kiefer will take you to a ship inside a hidden cave. From now on you’ll be able to use this ship to travel. Your next stop is Ballymoloy’s island in the present time.
You’ll notice Ballymoloy is changed. A man in the big central building will give you a Green Fragment and tell you you can find more fragments in the Rainbow Mines. The mine is in the same place as before.
The mine has a similar puzzle to the first time you cleared it. The first two floors have no puzzles at all, just follow the path and go down the stairs when you see them.
On this floor, make the red, blue and yellow boulders touch each other so they disappear and allow you to get to the next floor.
On this floor, push the first red rock you see to the north and then to the east, until it touches the other red rock. Then push the blue one to the right until it touches the other blue rock, and head to the stairs.
Connect the two pairs of yellow rocks you’ll see to get to the next floor.
On the next floor, get to the southwestern corner of the room and push the red rock up, and connect the two red rocks in the middle. Walk back and push the blue rock in the center to the left to access the next floor.
Go to the center of this giant room now and head down the stairs. You’ll reach a cross-section with 4 different paths. Take the path straight north to find the second Red Fragment.
Finding the third Red Fragment
Leave the Rainbow Mines and head to Estard Castle. Talk to the guard so he lowers the drawbridge, head to the second floor and take the southern door out. Enter the room to the northeast and talk to the guard to let you and Dermot enter the place.
After a dialogue, the Boatman will let you use the raft.
Exit the room in the raft and go to the opposite side of the castle. Land on the stairs and follow the path north until you reach the backdoor of the castle.
You’ll be behind a fake wall in the main castle room. Head down the stairs to find the last Red Fragment. There’s also a Seed of Agility inside a pot in the room.
You got all the fragments now! Head to the Shrine of Mysteries and place them on the red pillar on the top left. Your party will see a vision of an active volcano and they’ll be transported to a new land, the Emberdale region, where you can continue the main story.
