How to get the unique “Fist of Rawr” Deathclaw Gauntlet in Fallout: New Vegas

Note: the weapon is called “Fist of the North Rawr” if the player has the Wild Wasteland trait.

The Fist of Rawr is a unique Deathclaw gauntlet, crafted from Rawr’s Talon, which can be acquired by killing the optional boss enemy Rawr, located in a cave past the Boxwood Hotel Roof in the Lonesome Road DLC.

The Fist of Rawr is notable for being the only available Deathclaw gauntlet in all of Fallout: New Vegas, unlike in Fallout 3, where it was craftable from regular Deathclaw hands.

Quick tips before going to get the weapons:

  • Lonesome Road DLC required. Rawr’s Talon can only be acquired from killing Rawr, who can only be found in the Lonesome Road DLC.
  • Unarmed skill of 75 or more required. To craft the weapon, an Unarmed skill of 75 or more is required.
  • Incredibly powerful enemy. Do NOT underestimate Rawr. Rawr is one of the most powerful enemies in the entire game. Rawr has 900HP, 15DT, and deals 350 damage with a single strike.
  • Use Flashbangs and Flare Guns. Rawr, being considered an abomination, can be frightened with Flashbangs and Flare Gun shots, causing Rawr to run away from you for a very short time.
    • This can be exploited. Fire a Flare Gun shot at Rawr to frighten it, fire a few shots (as many as you can in about 1-2 seconds), then fire the Flare Gun again, or throw a few Flashbangs. The Flare Gun has more range and its first shot is faster and more precise, but Flashbangs can be thrown faster consecutively.
    • Both of these weapons can be found randomly throughout the DLC, or bought from the Commissary terminals.
  • Bring your most powerful weapons. Weapons like the Fat Man or the Holy Hand Grenade (guide to acquire here) are going to make dealing with Rawr much easier. But whatever weapons you do decide to bring, make sure that they can deal as much damage as possible within the shortest amount of time.
    • Alternatively, there are several undetonated nuclear warheads around the area that Rawr spawns. You may attempt to use a Flare Gun or Flashbangs to chase Rawr close enough to one of these warheads and detonate it. This will kill Rawr instantly if done properly. Do note that this tactic is rather risky and unreliable without practice.

Acquisition of the First of Rawr

Be wary of the Deathclaws that lurk in the following area.Rawr can be found in a cave located past the Boxwood Hotel Roof, in the final area of the Divide, next to a sewage pipe, out of which flows a massive amount of irradiated water, which forms a lake below it.

Once you’ve found the cave, head inside. A boulder will fall behind you, cutting you off from an escape. You will see a backpack as well as a first-aid kit on the ground. They contain some supplies that will aid in the fight against Rawr (specifically, a Flare Gun).

You should hear and possibly even see Rawr towards the back end of the cave.

Using the tips from the start of the guide, you’ll have to find a way to kill Rawr, how exactly you do it is up to you, as the method used does not matter. Rawr will always have its talon on its corpse. Pick it up.

Once you’re ready to leave, follow the path up onto a ridge, eventually, you should see a nuclear warhead

Detonate it with the Laser Detonator that you got earlier in the DLC. That will free up the path outside and you will be able to leave.

Lastly, find a workbench (or speak to ED-E/Veronica) and craft the Fist of Rawr.

Tips for using the Fist of Rawr

  • The weapon is unique in that it ignores enemy Damage Threshold and Damage Resistance. This is incredibly useful when fighting heavily armored opponents, like robots, Brotherhood of Steel members, Legion centurions
    • This also allows the player to overcome enemies that are blocking, as the weapon ignores the bonus DT received from blocking.
  • Despite only needing an Unarmed skill of 75 to craft, a skill of 100 is required to properly use the weapon.
  • The weapon has a high critical hit multiplier (2x) and high critical hit damage (75), making it useful for unarmed builds that use critical hits.
