How to get Erdrick’s Sword in Dragon Quest 1

Erdrick’s Sword, one of the strongest swords in the game, is found in Charlock Castle AKA the Dragonlord’s Castle. You can get it before you reach the final boss, the Dragonlord.

Preparation

  1. Be at least level 18. This is the end game so the monsters will be the most difficult yet. If you need to grind additional levels, you can do so at Damdara where Metal Slimes can be found.
  1. Avoid using Sizzle. Sizzle is learned at level 19 and you may hit this level on the way to the sword or the Dragonlord. Unfortunately, most monsters in the castle resist Sizzle, making it nearly useless. Conserve your MP for healing.
  1. Stock up on items. When you head to get the sword and before you head to the Dragonlord, Zoom to Tantegel, heal at the Inn and stock up on Medicinal Herbs and Magic Keys.

When you get to the fourth floor, there will be more paths to follow which lead to other treasures, but your main goal is the Sword. Start by going west, ignoring the first set of stairs you pass by.
