There are six rare species of fish in Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town, known as the “King Fish”. These are not your typical fish that you can catch by normal means. Each one is extremely rare and requires a specific method to catch.

Requirements

You cannot catch any of the King Fish using a regular fishing rod. Copper, silver, gold, and even mystrile fishing rods won’t work. What you need to catch a King Fish is a cursed, blessed, or mythic fishing rod.

You also need to have the kitchen and its upgrades, as one of the King Fish requires you to have cooked certain recipes.

King Fish Locations 

You can check what King Fish you have already caught by pressing Start and selecting the “Fishing” window. This window shows your fishing records such as the size and number of fish you’ve caught. You’ll find the records for the King Fish at the bottom.

Monkfish

You can catch the monkfish in the ocean. Go to Mineral Beach between 10 PM and 8 AM and fish at the docks. It only appears in the spring and winter seasons.

Huchen

You can catch the huchen in the river that runs through your farm. You must first cook the sushi, grilled fish, and sashimi and have their recipes recorded in the recipe book. The huchen appears in any season except winter.

Recipes:

• Sashimi: Large or medium fish + knife
• Sushi: Sashimi + Rice Balls + Vinegar
• Grilled Fish: Medium fish + Oil + Frying Pan + Salt + Soy Sauce

Catfish

You can only find the catfish by fishing in the hot spring during winter. The fishing spot is the water where you would normally sit and take a bath to recover your stamina. It does not appear in any other season.

Carp

You can catch the carp at the lake in the mountain after you’ve shipped 200 or more fish. You can ship any size of fish, and it will count toward your total number of fish shipped. The carp will appear in any season except winter.

You can check how many fish you have shipped by pressing the Start button, selecting “Earnings” and scrolling down the “number shipped” window. 

Tip: The best place to fish is the mountain lake, as catching trash here is low. Bring the basket with you and put the fish you catch in it instead of going back and forth into the shipping bin. Don’t forget to empty its contents to your shipping bin later.

Squid

You can catch the squid in the ocean after you throw a small fish in the water before casting your fishing rod. You can catch the squid during any season except winter.

Tip: Small fish typically appear in the river or mountain lake, so catch one here first before going to the ocean.

Coelacanth

After you catch the other five King Fish, go to the winter mine’s 9^th floor. There is an entrance that will lead to an underground pond where you can catch this fish. The winter mine is only accessible during winter.

Important Note: The entrance to the underground pond on the 9^th floor of the winter mine will always be there. You can access the underground pond, but the coelacanth will not appear unless you’ve caught the other King Fish.
