How to find Mutant Taun in Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout

There are multiple locations you can harvest Mutant Taun depending on your progress of the game:

  • By gathering at certain Bags at Weissberg Volcano – Smoky Mountain Path
  • By breaking certain Large Pots with your Staff at Kurken Bunker – Abyssal Stairway
  • By reaping certain Ferns and Bushes with a Scythe at Underworld – Ashen Forest
  • Using a Travel Bottle to create a world that has Ether Aqua as one of it’s gatherable materials.

Locations for Farming Mutant Taun

Weissberg Volcano – Smoky Mountain Path

This is one of the earliest locations to get a Mutant Taun, however it is the least recommended as there are only a couple of bags that can yield it and the odds of getting it are very low, so it’s not reliable if you need a large amount of them.

You will need a Hammer or Bomb Hammer to access the bags.

To get to the bags that can yield Mutant Taun, head to Weissberg Volcano – Smoky Mountain Path.

When, you arrive, take the left path to the location on the map.

To get into the area with the bags, you’ll need to use a Hammer or Bomb Hammer to break the boulders blocking the way.

Once in the area, there are two bags inside that you can gather at, and each one has a possibility to yield a Mutant Taun.

This is the least recommended method for farming, but it is the earliest if you need a Mutant Taun early in the game’s story.

Kurken Bunker – Abyssal Stairway

The next location to get Mutant Taun is at Kurken Bunker – Abyssal Stairway, which is also the next location in the progression of the story where you will be able to farm Mutant Taun. This is the most recommended location as it is not only close to the arrival location, there are no monsters to avoid.

Once you arrive, immediately to your left will be three large jars you can break with your Staff. These are the only Jars in the whole map that have a chance to drop Mutant Taun, so don’t waste your time breaking any other jars.

Each of the three Jars has a chance to drop a combination of Ether Aqua, Silver Uni, Mutant Taun or any combination of them, including a chance to just not have either of the items.

You can hit all the the jars in about 10 seconds so even if you only get a couple, you can quickly reload the map and get back to the jars again for another try. Because of this, it is the most recommended method of farming Mutant Taun.

Underworld – Ashen Forest

This is the last location you’re able to get Mutant Taun on the world map as it is in the last accessible area of the game. There are multiple ferns you can harvest on this map with Mutant Taun, however there are also a number of aggressive monsters that could give you some problems depending on your level. Because of this, there are two options you can pursue:

  1. If you don’t want to deal with dodging monsters and you exclusively just want Mutant Taun, you can harvest the nearest fern, then reload the map and repeat.
  2. If you don’t mind fighting monsters or you also need some of their materials, you can clear the whole map of the five or six ferns on the map. You may be able to dodge some of the monsters, but their RNG placement will make some fights unavoidable.

Regardless of your decision, you will need a Scythe or Scythe Axe in order to harvest Mutant Taun from the ferns.

First, head to Underworld – Ashen Forest.

As soon as you arrive, shift the camera to view below and you’ll see a fern right at the bottom of the stairs. These large ferns are what you’ll be using your Scythe or Scythe Axe on to harvest Mutant Taun.

At this point, if you don’t feel like traveling the whole map dodging monsters and inevitably getting into combat and just want the Mutant Taun, you can reload the map here and just keep coming back to this fern. This is the most recommended method for this map.

If you want to farm the map, then image below will show you the location of all the ferns on the map.

Keep in mind that all the monsters on the map are aggressive and will chase you if you are close to them. Due to random monster AI pathing and because Ryza can’t move while she’s swinging her Scythe, there’s a good chance you’ll end up in a fight while you’re going from fern to fern.

The following monsters are the ones you may encounter, as well as their weaknesses so you can eliminate them quickly if you do end up in a battle. The only exception is the Dark General. It won’t chase you so you can get close to it if you want.

Using Travel Bottles to farm Mutant Taun

Once you’ve reached a certain portion of the game, you will unlock the ability to use the Travel Bottle. Travel Bottles are mini-areas that will yield high amounts of specific materials if you know the correct code and contain enemies of a certain level depending on the Travel Bottle level. Harvesting in these areas will not require any tools. You only need to interact with the gathering node.

Learn more about Travel Bottles in our guide by following this link.

Each area will have a “Main” material and a “Secondary” material indicated by the order shown in the Travel Bottle menu, with the left being the “Main” and the right being the “Secondary”. Harvesting in bottle areas will yield slightly more of the “Main” item than the “Secondary” item.

Recommended Harvesting Location

The recommended harvesting location for Mutant Taun depends on a number of factors:

  • Game Progression – Whether or not you have access to all the maps and / or Travel Bottles
  • Travel Bottle Level – Even if you have access to Travel Bottles, if the item level is too high, you won’t be able to access the Travel Bottle world until you have the required amount of Travel Bottles.
  • Your Level – Higher level worlds will spawn monsters of an equivalent level to the world. Although the monsters can be avoided, if you end up in a fight that’s too above your level, you might get wiped out.
  • Farming Multiple Materials – If you are farming multiple materials, Travel Bottles may be more efficient as there are item combinations that cannot be harvested easily in the game. For example, in the image above, the Travel Bottle world yield both Mutant Taun and Spirit Feather. There is no map in the game where you would be able to farm these two items at the same time, so if you need both, the Travel Bottle would be extremely efficient.
  • Access to Gem Farming Techniques – Restoring a Travel Bottle world once you’ve used it costs gems. The higher the level, the more expensive it will be. If you don’t have access to Gem farming techniques, using Travel Bottles to farm large amounts of a material will be difficult to impossible.

No Access to Travel Bottle

Kurken Island – Abyssal Stairway and Underworld – Ashen Forest are equally recommended as the best ways to farm Mutant Farm for the following reasons:

  • Distance – The gathering nodes for both maps are within 5 seconds of the spawn point of the map, allowing for quick gathering and map reloading.
  • No Monsters – There are either no monsters on the map or the monsters don’t spawn near the closest gathering node, so no need to dodge monsters.

Access to Travel Bottle

The minimum required bottle level for Mutant Taun is 46.

Whenever a material has a Travel Bottle code, 99% of the time it will be the best location to harvest the material assuming you have gems to afford the bottle refresh. The only reason it wouldn’t be is if you only need a few of the material, in which case the Travel Bottle method isn’t worth the time or gems.

The following reasons are why Travel Bottle is usually the best:

  • Fast access to material. The Travel Bottle areas are small so the harvest nodes are a few seconds from the entrance. You can gather every harvest node within 15 to 20 seconds of arriving. Some materials in the main world can take that long just to arrive at the harvesting point.
  • More harvest nodes. Many harvest nodes in the main world only have 1 to 3 harvestable nodes in a given area before you have to reload the area. You’ll always have 6 to 7 harvest nodes in a travel bottle.
  • Targeted farming. It is more than likely that you will need multiple materials for the recipe you need to synthesize and they are often very different types of materials that may require you to visit multiple locations. Using the chart below, you can efficiently farm two specific materials you need and greatly cut down on travel time.
  • Faster harvesting. Some of the harvest tools have a few seconds of animation, with the worst offender being the Bomb Rod. All harvest nodes in a Travel Bottle simply require you to Gather with the “A” button and require no harvest tools.

“A Taun variant. Its color and shape are completely different. Nobody’s sure why it originally mutated, but it’s often found growing in small clusters, leading some to believe it’s related to the soil.”
