How to complete Raul’s companion quest “Old School Ghoul” Fallout: New Vegas
How to complete Raul’s companion quest “Old School Ghoul” Fallout: New Vegas

Raul’s companion quest, “Old School Ghoul”, can be unlocked by exhausting the dialogue options of several characters while Raul is in your party around the wasteland. Those characters are Ranger Andy, Corporal Sterling, and Loyal.

Quick tips before you head out:

  • Your dialogue choices change the outcome. After you speak to each of these people, Raul will approach you and speak to you, asking you a question each time. Depending on your answer, you’ll either encourage Raul to work on his repairing skill (by implying that old people should remain more passive) or to instead lean into his cowboy past (by implying that no matter how old one is, they can still be great combatants and that age doesn’t have any bearing on ability).
  • The order is arbitrary. The order in which you speak to the 3 people is completely arbitrary. Though, due to several errors associated with the coding of this quest, it’s recommended that you start with Ranger Andy.
  • Unmarked quest. While this quest doesn’t need to be unlocked in any special way, completing it may be difficult due to the complete lack of quest markers or quest-log guidance.
  • Always talk to Raul after leaving the area. All of these people are located in interior areas. Whenever you’re done exhausting all of their dialogue options, leave the area and go to the Mojave wasteland and talk to Raul to ensure that the quest is continuing as it should.

Person #1: Ranger Andy

Ranger Andy is an ex-NCR Ranger that lives in Novac, a settlement located south of the 188 Trading Post.

Note: There is a small chance that Raul will not speak to you after you leave Ranger Andy’s house due to a bug. If you’re playing on a PC, this can be fixed by entering the following command into the console: “set “000e61a5”.MetRangerAndy to 1” (without the first and last quotation marks). This must be done inside a building, such as Ranger Andy’s house. Raul should speak to you after leaving the building.

Person #2: Corporal Sterling

Corporal Sterling is an NCR First Recon Sniper who can be found at Camp McCarran, inside the First Recon tent. Alternatively, he can be found at Camp Forlorn Hope if you’ve finished the quest “Three Card Bounty”. He will be inside either the Mess Hall or the Barracks.

Person #3: Loyal

Loyal is a member of the Boomers who can be found at the Nellis Air Force Base, usually hanging around inside one of the hangars (usually in the southern one). If he’s not there, just wait a few in-game hours and look again.

To even get into the Nellis Air Force Base, you’ll have to dodge an artillery barrage. To do this, you can follow this guide, which explains the easiest way to get past the artillery.

Quest Rewards

To avoid spoiling the rest of Raul’s quest, this is where the guide ends. As an added note, here are the rewards for finishing the quest in its two main ways:

  • Encourage Raul to return to his guns: Raul’s Fire Rate with Lever-Action weapons and Revolvers increases by 33%.
  • Encourage Raul to stick to repairing and maintenance: His regular companion perk will be improved, further decreasing the rate at which your weapons degrade while he’s in your party (from 50% less degradation to 75% less degradation).
