The Reaper’s Scythe is a gathering tool in Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & The Secret Hideout. You can use it on plants, rocks and trees to obtain different ingredients. It’s also the first gathering tool you will synthesize in the game as well as the first recipe morph.

You will synthesize the Reaper’s Scythe as part of the main story. It is a mandatory item to complete Chapter 2, Taking the First Step, part 4.

Quick tips on how to synthesize the Reaper’s Scythe:

1. Raise Your Alchemy Level: Synthesizing the Reaper’s Scythe requires Alchemy Level 4. The fastest way to raise your level is by synthesizing low quality Green Beans or Explosive Unis.
2. Obtain a Large Bone: The Reaper’s Scythe is a recipe morph, and requires you to add a Large Bone to the Ingot recipe. You can obtain Large Bones from monsters.

How to Obtain the Ingredients for the Reaper’s Scythe

Synthesizing a Reaper’s Scythe requires the following ingredients:

1. An Amatite Ore.
2. A generic Ore ingredient.
3. A generic Fuel ingredient.
4. A Large Bone.

Here is how you can obtain each one of them:

Collecting an Amatite Ore

You can find an Amatite Ore in the Shipyard. 

Fast travel to the Desert Port and use the boat to get to the Shipyard. Head north of the pier and towards the rocky walls near Traveler’s Road. Collect these rocks and you will obtain an Amatite Ore.

You can also gather extra Amatite Ores to use in the second ingredient loop.

Gathering a Fuel Ingredient

You can gather fuel ingredients from any of the trees around Kurken Island. 

There is one just outside of Ryza’s house. Swing the staff at it until you obtain an Oil Tree Fruit.

Another option is to obtain a Scrap of Paper. Fast travel to Kurken Port – Lighthouse and swing the staff at these wooden boxes.

Obtaining a Large Bone

The Large Bone is the most important ingredient in this recipe. You can obtain it from monsters on Traveler’s Road.

The Large Bone is a common drop from Mini Wyverns. Defeating these monsters is the easiest way to collect the ingredient.

The Large Bone is also a rare drop from Giant Weasels. You can find them on Traveler’s Road and in Pixie Forest.

Synthesizing the Reaper’s Scythe

With all the necessary ingredients in hand, fast travel back to Ryza’s room.

Head over to the cauldron and select the Ingot recipe.

Start with the Amatie Ore.  Next, add the second Ore ingredient to the Quality loop. Then, add the Fuel ingredient to the Traits loop. 

The Large Bone goes into the Recipe loop. This step will complete the recipe morph from Ingot into Reaper’s Scythe.

After adding the Large Bone, select yes to synthesize the Reaper’s Scythe.

The result screen will confirm that you have successfully synthesized the item.

Using the Reaper’s Scythe to Gather Ingredients

After synthesizing the Reaper’s Scythe, you will need to equip it. You can only equip gathering tools inside Ryza’s room or in her Atelier.

Open the menu and select “Gathering Tools”.

In the next screen, select the Reaper’s Scythe and confirm to equip it.

With the Reaper’s Scythe equipped, you will be able to use it in order to gather ingredients.

Switch gathering tools by pressing Q (keyboard),  LB (joystick), L (Switch) or L1 (PS4).

Use the Reaper’s Scythe on plants, trees and rocks. You will need it to advance the next quest in the main story.

Fast travel to the Secluded Farm entrance and head west of the Guide Post. Make sure you have the Reaper’s Scythe selected by checking the icon just above the minimap.

Swing the Scythe at these plants to gather Kurken Fruits. You will need five of them in total to complete the quest.
