How to recruit Raul in Fallout: New Vegas
How to recruit Raul in Fallout: New Vegas

Raul is a ghoul gunslinger that can be recruited as a permanent companion by breaking him out of the Prison Building in Black Mountain.

Quick tips before you go recruit Raul.

  • Dangerous enemies in the area. Black Mountain is filled to the brim with Nightkin and Supermutants, all equipped with powerful, heavy weaponry like Flamers, Super Sledges, Miniguns, and Missile Launchers. Clearing the enemies out is recommended, but not required.
  • Recruiting Raul will make Tabitha hostile. If you haven’t finished the “Crazy, Crazy, Crazy” quest before recruiting Raul, Tabitha will attack you immediately as you leave the Radio building.

Recruiting Raul

To recruit Raul, you’ll need to go to Black Mountain, a location situated between the El Dorado Gas Station and the Hidden Valley.

Once you’re there, head up to the main compound and look for the Prison Building.

You may not see the entrance at first, which is because, for some reason, the entrance is facing the wall of the adjacent Storage Building.

Once inside, interact with the terminal that you see on your left and read the 6th entry. This will give you the password for the other terminal in the room.

Walk up to the other terminal, open it using the password from the previous terminal, and select the “Disengage Lock” option.

This will unlock the door at the back of the room. This door leads to Raul.

Walk up to him and talk to him. He will ask you if he’s free to go. Pick the following dialogue options:

“It’s okay by me. Enjoy your freedom.” | Fallout: New Vegas
“It’s okay by me. Enjoy your freedom.”
“Actually, do you want to tag along with me?” | Fallout: New Vegas
“Actually, do you want to tag along with me?”

After selecting this dialogue option, Raul will join you as a companion.

If you aren’t sure whether or not you’ve finished the “Crazy, Crazy, Crazy” quest, you’ll know if you hear Tabitha, the Nightkin leader of Black Mountain, scream at you over Raul’s radio. If you do, be prepared to get attacked the moment you leave the building.
