Recruiting Rex

G.I. Blues

To recruit Rex, you’ll have to finish a short quest for the King, “Nothin’ But a Hound Dog”, which itself requires you to finish the quest “G.I. Blues”. To start the quest, go to the King’s School of Impersonation, which can be found northeast of the Strip gate.

Once you enter the school, you’ll have to talk to Pacer, the man standing outside of the leftmost door.

Once you’ve talked to him, ask to see the king. He will ask for payment. Here, you can either pass the Speech check or pay 50 caps. Don’t worry if you can’t pass the Speech check, the King will reimburse you later.

Now go speak to the King. If you had to pay Pacer, you can ask for your caps back by selecting the “Do you always charge people to come talk to you?” dialogue option. If you passed the Speech check, the first dialogue option you select doesn’t matter.

The King will now give you a job. While you can go through with it in its entirety (and doing so will allow you to experience some more of what Freeside has to offer), the fastest way to complete the quest is a lot easier.

Follow the quest marker to Orris, who will be standing by Freeside’s north gate.

Here, you can simply kill Orris. There are no long-term consequences for doing this.

Return to the King and tell him that you’ve finished the job.

The King will give you another job, you can take the quest if you want, but regardless of what you do, you will be taken out of the dialogue box.

Talk to the King again and tell him that you want to ask some questions, from here, select the following dialogue options:

This will start the “Nothin’ But a Hound Dog” quest.

Make your way to the Old Mormon Fort, located just across the street from where you killed Orris.

Inside, look for Julie Farkas, a woman with a mohawk who is wearing scientist scrubs.

Talk to her and select the “The King said you could tell me more about his robotic dog.” dialogue option.

Exhaust all of her dialogue options, eventually, you’ll learn what you need to know for the quest to continue.

From here, go back to the King.

Talk to the King again and tell him that Rex can be cured. The King will now give you Rex as a companion.
