The easiest way to get the Shoulder Mounted Machine Gun in Fallout: New Vegas

The shoulder mounted machine gun is an interesting and rare heavy weapon found in a few locations added with the Lonesome Road DLC. Despite its appearance resembling that of a Minigun, it actually fires 10mm ammunition at high damage per shot, but a low rate of fire when compared to weapons like the Minigun.

Quick tips before getting the gun:

  • Multiple ways to acquire. There are several ways in which the gun can be acquired. Technically, there is no limit to how many can spawn during a playthrough, as low-condition ones may be found on high level Marked Men towards the end of the DLC. However, despite this, the gun is fairly rare, not to mention that repeatedly fighting Marked Men may be time consuming.
  • Expensive Repairs. Due to the gun being a unique category of weapon, it can only be repaired by other Shoulder Mounted Machine Guns, by repair vendors or by Weapon Repair Kits. The weapon’s high value makes repairing it at a vendor very expensive, and not even the Jury Rigging perk will help as it has no effect on the weapon.
  • Weapon Mods. As the weapon is not technically a unique weapon, it can be modified with 3 separate weapon mods, which are all sold by the Commissary terminals found in the Divide.

How to get the Shoulder Mounted Machine Gun

Method 1: Women’s Barracks

This method is the earliest possible moment in which the gun can be acquired. However, its appearance in this location is not guaranteed. Coming here at a higher level may increase your odds of the gun appearing.

First, you must complete the first stage of the quest “The Job”, given to you by Ulysses right after you exit the Hopeville Missile Silo. Finishing the first stage of the quest leads you to acquiring the Laser Detonator, which allows you to detonate the nuclear warheads scattered around the Divide.

Once you have the detonator, head to the unmarked “Women’s barracks” location found right across the road from the Solitare gas station, or south-west of the location “Hopeville Missile Base- West Entrance”.

Stay back and use the Laser Detonator to detonate the wearhead in front of you. This will remove the debris in front of the door, allowing you to enter.

There will be no Marked Men at first. To spawn the Marked Men, you’ll have to walk through the doorway directly opposite to the entrance.

After that, 2 Marked Men will enter through the door you came in from, one of whom has the potential to carry the Shoulder Mounted Machine Gun.

Method 2: Beast

This is the first guaranteed spawn of the Shoulder Mounted Machine gun.

Continue the main storyline of the DLC until you reach the quest “The Launch”. This quest will take you to an area called High Road.

Right at the beginning of High Road, you’ll encounter a group of Marked Men, who are led by a unique enemy named Beast. He is the one carrying the Shoulder Mounted Machine Gun.

Tips for using the Shoulder Mounted Machine Gun

This weapon becomes much better after its modifications are installed. There are 3 available mods and they can all be purchased from the Commissary Terminals for 10,000 bottle caps each.

  • Extended Magazine:  Increases the magazine size by 15.
  • Recoil Compensator: Decreases spread by 0.2.
  • Mechanical Upgrade: Increases durability by 25%.

Each one of these upgrades is incredibly important if you wish to make this weapon your primary one. Decreasing the weapon’s spread allows you to aim for weak spots, increasing its magazine size makes killing several enemies easier, and increasing the durability makes it possible to keep using it for longer before spending weapon repair kits for repairs.

The weapon has both a low rate of fire and a high spread, so either the Trigger Discipline or Fast Shot trait works well with the weapon.

Critical hit boosting perks/items are useless, as the weapon cannot score critical hits.
