“Still in the Dark” Quest Guide in Fallout: New Vegas – Power Armor Training Perk Prerequisite Quest

Still in the Dark” is the prerequisite quest towards getting the Power Armor Training Perk that allows you to wear Power Armor. Once it is complete, the quests “Eyesight to the Blind” or “Tend to your Business” will become available, either of which will reward you the Power Armor Training Perk upon completion.

Tips before taking on this quest:

  1. Bring Veronica as a companion. Although necessary, bringing her will make starting the quest much faster as it lets you skip the first portion of the quest.
  2. Bring Turbo or the Implant GRX. A single use of either one will make getting past the boomer artillery area much faster and easier.
  3. Stock up. This quest involves visiting multiple areas filled with enemies including 3 vaults. Stocking up on ammunition and heal items is recommended though sneaking past the enemies is also an option.
  4. Ammunition. For the “Eyesight to the Blind” quest, hollow point ammunition is recommended if your weapon can use it. For the “Tend to your Business” quest, armor piercing ammunition will have the best effect, as the area of the quest has armored mutants patrolling the area.
  5. Repair of 50. Having a repair skill of 50 or more will make one stage of the quest, Vault 22, much easier, but it is not strictly necessary.

Still in the Dark

Before you start the quest, it is recommended that you bring Veronica with you. Veronica can be found at the 188 Trading Post which is located on the road north of Novac and west of Boulder City.

After speaking to Veronica, she will ask you if you know anything about the Brotherhood of Steel. Do not select any option that shows hostility or negativity towards the Brotherhood and she will offer to join you. As long as you don’t have any other human companion, you can accept and she will join you.

Then travel to Hidden Valley, located north of the NCR Correctional Facility and east of Goodsprings. After you reach the gate, turn left and follow the fence until you pass a hill where you can find a blast-proof door that leads to the Brotherhood of Steel bunker. There are 3 other doors in the area but they lead to dead ends.

Once you enter the bunker, head downstairs and Veronica will give you access to its locked area. Head through the door that she unlocks and enter the lower part of the bunker. Descend the stairs and follow it down to find Paladin Ramos who will give you the quest “Still in the Dark”.

Location of Elder McNamara. | Fallout: New Vegas - Power Armor Training Perk Prerequisite Quest

Follow the quest marker which will lead you to Elder McNamara who will ask for your help with finding 3 paladin squads. Accept the task and head outside.

Paladin Hardin will speak to you on your way out and ask you to help him overthrow Elder McNamara. You can do so if you wish, but doing so will have following consequences:

  1. You will be unable to come to a peaceful resolution to Cass’ companion quest Heartache by the Numbers.
  2. The path is slightly more difficult than the usual path.

After leaving the bunker, you will see that you have 3 quest markers. Each one will lead you to a different squad of dead paladins. You must go to all 3 locations and grab a holotape that will be on one of the dead paladins in each squad.

Tip: After you leave the correct bunker, drop an item in front of the door, that way, you can make sure that you are entering the correct door whenever you come back.

Paladin Squad Location 1: Black Mountain

Head in the direction of the nearest quest marker and you will be able to see a satellite in the distance past a break in the fence that surrounds Hidden Valley. Go through it and head towards the satellite.

You will find a massive crater with several centaurs including a unique named centaur, Moe. Kill them or sneak past them and head to the bottom of the crater to find 3 dead paladins, one of whom has the required holotape.

Tip: The paladins all have Brotherhood T-51b Power Armor in low-condition that you can pick up and repair using the other power armors. Although you can’t wear it yet, Veronica can if you still have her with you. You will get another suit once you finish Eyesight to the Blind anyways.

Paladin Squad Location 2: REPCONN Headquarters

Head to the quest marker north-west of the 188 Trading Post to reach the REPCONN Headquarters. You will see some friendly robots nearby that are best left alone.

Inside the facility you will see several dead fiends by a door to your right. If you have a Science or Lockpick skill of 50, you can open it by hacking the adjacent terminal or lock picking the door.

If you don’t have either skill high enough, find and speak to the nearby Tour Guide robot who will give you a tour of the museum. Once you reach a planetarium, you will see a door on your left. Head through and head up the stairs where you will find a keycard laying on a console that will allow you to go through the previously mentioned locked door by the fiend corpses.

Once through the door, go left until reach a hallway with 2 different doors:

  1. Left Door: The blast-proof door leads to an area with a unique plasma rifle, the Q-35 Matter Modulator. If your Lockpick skill is high enough, you can open that door to retrieve it. It is a powerful weapon that will make the later parts of the quest easier.
  2. Right Door: The door on your right leads to a flight of stairs, which leads to the 2nd floor to continue with the quest.

Once you enter the right door, you will be approached by a robot. If you have a Luck stat of 9 or above, he will let you pass. If you don’t, he will tell you that you can’t go any further. Ignore it.

Head to the 2nd floor, follow the hall and take the first door on your left, you will see a very easy-locked terminal. Hack it and select the first option. Doing so allows you to explore the 2nd floor without being attacked by the bots.

Head to the end of the hall opposite to where you came in to find a flight of stairs that leads you to the 3rd floor.

On the 3rd floor, you will see 2 dead paladins under a collapsed ceiling. Loot the bodies for the holotape. A security bot may approach you and give 30 seconds to leave before alerting security, which is more than enough to loot the bodies and leave.

Paladin Squad Location 3: Nellis Air Force Base

The last paladin squad is outside of the Nellis AFB. Do not head straight to them or you will be fired upon by the Boomers with long range artillery when you get near.

In order to safely get past, keep to the left side of the area (following the hill there) and use a dose of either Turbo or of Implant GRX (Old World Blues DLC required) the moment that you hear the first artillery strike coming towards you and rush towards the gate. Doing this will allow you to quickly get past the artillery. Follow the fence to the gate.

Once through the gate, a Boomer will speak to you. Follow his instructions and the instructions of everyone who speaks to you until an elderly Boomer, Pearl, lets you go free. Now you can safely explore the site where you were fired upon.

Follow the quest marker to the dead paladin in a crater.

Return to the Elder

After you gather all 3 tapes, return to Elder McNamara in the Hidden Valley bunker where he will ask you to speak with 3 scouts as the next objective.

Speak to the Scouts

The 3 scouts don’t have any enemies around them and are located near locations that you most likely already visited- Camp Forlorn Hope, Nipton and the NCR Correctional Facility

This is straightforward so as soon as you are done speaking to them all, return to McNamara.

Return to the Elder and Speak to Knight Lorenzo

McNamara will inform you that the air filtration system is about to break down. Follow the quest marker and speak to Knight Lorenzo who will tell you to look for 3 of the parts necessary to fix the air filtration system. All of these parts are located in vaults.

Air Filtration Parts 1: Vault 11

Located west of the 188 Trading Post, this vault is the easiest vault to navigate as well as fight through as the main enemies that you encounter are giant rats and giant mantises. However, you may encounter powerful robots if you venture into the Sacrificial Chamber located underneath the Overseer’s Office, but this is not necessary for the quest so don’t go in unless you’re prepared for a difficult fight.

On the first floor just follow the quest marker and the local map. Focus on descending deeper into the vault.

On the second floor, opposite to where you enter from, there will be an admin door. Go through there and take a right to the third floor.

Beware. The third floor has traps such as tripwires and mines so keep an eye out for those. Follow the Utility signs until you get to a flooded section of the vault. Dive in and take the first right to find the differential pressure controller hidden inside of a locker.

Once you pick it up, leave the way you came to the next location, Vault 22.

Air Filtration Parts 2: Vault 22

This vault is located far west of the Gun Runners and north of Red Rock Canyon.

On your way there, you may encounter cazadores and giant mantises which require some caution, but the most dangerous enemies are the spore carriers within the vault. Spore carriers are mutated plant people that hide in the overgrown areas of the vault and cannot be detected via VATS or your compass and will only attack once you are close enough. They deal high damage and have a high amount of health.

Tip: While going through the vault, always check any plant areas that look like the picture shown below, you can even fire a shot in there just in case that there is a hidden spore carrier waiting to ambush you.

After you enter the vault you find the elevator down a flight of stairs. If you have a Repair skill of 50, you can repair it and go straight to the 4th floor. If your repair skill isn’t high enough, you will have to use the stairs to the 4th level instead.

Once there, follow the signs and go to the Overseer’s Office which is on the same level past a projector in the far corner of the room straight ahead of you. Then head to a terminal in the corner of the room and click all 3 options.

After that, exit the overseer’s office and jump over the safety railing to the floor below. Beware as this area is filled with spore carriers. Head through the door with the “Quarters” sign.

Return to the stairs/elevator (you can get there by going through a door labeled “Upper Level” back in the room where you dropped down to) and go to the 3rd floor.

Follow the corridor until you see a door on the right. Through it, you will see a terminal next to a large hermetic door. Interact with it and disengage the lock on the door.

The hermetic door will open to a cave-like area. Take a right and keep going until you see a wooden door that leads to the 3rd floor.

Once you walk through the door, continue on until you arrive in a room with several sets of lockers. The marked locker has the 6 HEPA filters that you need.

Retrace your steps to the elevator/stairs and exit the vault and start heading south-east to the last vault: Vault 3.

Air Filtration Parts 3: Vault 3

Vault 3 is located inside South Vegas Ruins which is invested with Fiends that can sometimes spawn with energy weapons, making them a significant threat. It is highly recommended that you prepare with a lot of healing items and ammo before proceeding with this area.

Location of Vault 3. | Fallout: New Vegas - Power Armor Training Perk Prerequisite Quest

Tip: If you have a Speech skill of 64 or more, you can convince the fiend that speaks to you when you enter the vault that you are there to sell chems, which will turn all of the fiends neutral and you will be able to freely explore the vault.

After entering the vault and speaking to the fiend there, head through the door in the back of the room, take a right and follow the corridor until you see a flight of stairs leading down. Take them to immediately find another flight of stairs on your right leading further down. Take them and you will see a door that leads to the maintenance wing.

Head straight through, take a right, then a left, then go through the door through a room with another door on the right side of the room. Go through and you will see Motor-Runner, the leader of the Fiends. Be aware that killing him will fail the Aba Daba Honeymoon quest.

Ignore or kill Motor Runner and look to your left where you find two lockers. One of them has the final part: the reverse pulse cleaner.

Return to Knight Lorenzo

With all the parts found, return to Senior Knight Lorenzo in the Hidden Valley bunker and give him the parts. He will tell you to go speak to the Elder again.  The Elder will mark the location of the Brotherhood of Steel safehouse on your map and give you the key to it.

This marks the end of the “Still in the Dark” quest and unlocks the “Eyesight to the Blind” quest which rewards you with the Power Armor Training Perk.
