Easily the longest and most spread out treasure hunt in Dragon Quest II, finding the five Sigils used to obtain the Eye of Rubiss and enter Rendarak is imperative to reaching the endgame. Three of them are are located in the Fire Shrine, Moonahan and Tantegel and this guide will show you how to obtain them
Before the proper guide, some Quick Tips:
- Sailing: You’ll be traveling all across the world map to get the Sigils.
- Ring of Keys: You’ll need the Gold Key and Jailor’s Key to reach these Sigils.
- Zooming: Now would be a good time to get most of these towns as Zoom locations if you haven’t done so yet.
Understanding The Quest

Dragon Quest II’s main objective is, of course, to defeat the wicked High Priest Hargon, but the Sigils are the most spread-out single questline you will encounter. Although the Sigils serve little mechanical purpose, they are necessary to unseal the path to Hargon’s Domain.
More specifically, the Sigils must be brought to the Shrine of Rubiss in order for your party to be granted the Eye of Rubiss, which in turn will help open the Cave to Rendarak.

Note: Rather than appear in a party member’s inventory, any Sigils acquired will be displayed with a representative icon in the game’s status screen. If you’re unsure how many you’ve gotten, checking for the Sigil icons is an easy way to remind yourself.
As with many items, quests, and areas, the Sigil quest can start as soon as you unlock the ship in Rippleport, where the game opens up massively.
Sailing To The Sun Sigil
The easiest Sigil to acquire is actually the one closest to the Shrine of Rubiss itself.

Zoom back to Midenhall, the very first town in the game. Hop in your newly acquired ship and start sailing south.

Keep going south until you see a Shrine on a tiny island. This is actually the Shrine of Rubiss, but there’s no point entering until you have all the Sigils (as well as the False Idol). For now, just make a mental note of its location and head east as soon as you see the island.

You’ll see a river heading inland. Follow the river and dock your ship, entering the castle just north of the river.
This is the kingdom of Dirkandor. Rather than stick around here, you’re mostly just here to register it as a Zoom location. Once you’ve entered the kingdom, go back outside and sail back out to where the river flows out to the seas, the same way you came to Dirkandor.
.

As soon as you’re out of the river, go south. You’ll eventually find several small islands, with one housing a Shrine to the east. This is the Fire Shrine. Dock and head inside it.

At the Fire Shrine, ignore the Teleportal circles and head for the sparkling tile on the grass. You’ve found the Sun Sigil. Congratulations!
Whereabouts Of The Water Sigil
Note: The rest of the Sigils covered in this will require you to have the Gold Key and Jailor’s Key.

The Gold Key is found by talking to the dog in the village of Zahan on the southeastern corner of the map, which in turn is used to unlock the underground city of Burrowell, where a merchant will sell you an item called “???”, which ends up being the Jailor’s Key.

Once you have the necessary Keys, Zoom to Moonahan, the village you met the Princess in.

In Moonahan, head for the small building southwest of the House of Worship. Use your Gold Key on the door and enter.

Head downstairs and you’ll find a cell with two Grimlins inside of it. Open it up with your Jailor’s Key and prepare for a fight!

The Grimlins have a list of abilities and spells that make prove for a troublesome fight, such as:
- Fizzle: Prevents your party members from casting spells.
- Midheal: Healing spell that restores 80-100 HP.
- Sizzle: A fire spell that will hit your party for quite a bit of damage.
- Call: Has a chance to summon more Grimlins into the fight.
With some well-timed heals and consistent physical attacks, however, the fight shouldn’t be too difficult.

After the fight, a sparkle will appear on the ground. Inspect it, and you’ll pick up the Water Sigil. Congratulations!
Seeking the Soul Sigil
The last Sigil covered in this guide is one of the most obscure locations for any item in Dragon Quest II. If you know what you’re doing, however, it should be a pretty trivial affair.

First, Zoom or sail to the kingdom of Tantegel, north of Dragonlord’s Castle.

In Tantegel, head west to the equipment shop. Take the staircase leading up to the second floor.

You’ll see a kingly NPC behind a door you can unlock with the Gold Key.

Talk to this inexplicably regal man, and he’ll give you the Soul Sigil. Congratulations!
