How To Get The Unique “The Smitty Special” Plasma Caster In Fallout: New Vegas

The Sitty Special is a unique Plasma Caster that can be purchased from Gloria Van Graff, located inside The Silver Rush in Freeside.

Quick tips before you go buy this weapon:

  • Expensive. The weapon is incredibly expensive, as it can cost as much as 25,000 caps.
    • You can circumvent the cost using Ghost Duping. The Ghost Dupe glitch allows you to purchase this weapon (and every other item) without it costing you a single cap. Link to a Ghost Duping guide here.

Comparing The Smitty Special To The Plasma Caster

  • The Smitty Special fires in fully automatic mode.
  • It deals less damage (35 damage vs 65).
  • It fires more than 2x faster than the base Plasma Caster (7 attacks/second vs 3 attacks/second), this gap can be closed by fully upgrading the Plasma Caster, which will allow it to fire 3.75 attacks/second.
  • It has nearly double the spread (1.3 vs 0.7).
  • It has 2x the magazine capacity (20 vs 10).
  • Its durability is far higher (1095 attacks before breaking vs 395 attacks before breaking).

Gameplay Tips

  • Due to the existence of the Plasma Caster High-Speed Electrode upgrade for the base plasma caster, this is more of a cool side-grade to the Plasma Caster than a direct upgrade, as the DPS of the two weapons (provided the upgrade is installed is nearly identical).
  • The decreased damage makes this weapon less suitable against armored enemies.
  • The best usecase for this weapon is as a crowd control weapon for an energy weapons build, however, this role is better filled by weapons like the Gatling Laser.
